Menno Derks makes partner at Sarona Asset Management
In early October, Sarona welcomed Menno Derks as the company’s fourth partner. Menno will continue to lead the company’s fund investment activities as Managing Director Fund Investments.
“Working with Menno is a great pleasure and an extremely rewarding experience,” said Gerhard Pries, Managing Partner & CEO of Sarona. “During the past 15 months he has done a sterling job at improving and further professionalising our fund investment capabilities and we are honoured to have him join us as partner.”
Menno has more than 10 years’ investing experience with a strong focus on private equity in frontier and emerging markets. With both an institutional and development investing background, Menno’s knowledge, experience and capabilities make him an ideal fit for Sarona. At PGGM, a large Dutch pension fund with over $180 billion assets under management, Menno served as founding member of their in-house private equity team and successfully developed and executed their Asia investment strategy. Menno also served for over four years as an investment officer at FMO, a Dutch development bank, where he focused on private equity investments in high-growth markets.
“Investing in SMEs in frontier and emerging markets has always been my passion, which is why Sarona is such a good fit,” Menno explains. “It’s very exciting to build portfolios that – often for the first time – make it possible for institutional investors to capture the real growth opportunity represented by SMEs within these markets.”
“Menno balances vision with a down-to-earth pragmatism that perfectly complements the management team,” said Vivina Berla, Managing Director. “His leadership will no doubt help us realise new heights.”
